Independent you: preventing, and recovering from, elder abuse

From implementing safeguards to stop it from beginning to taking back control if it does, there is a lot of power in your hands to avoid elder abuse.

Previously, we explored the warning signs of elder abuse and how it is possible to be a victim without even realising it.

And with more wealth owned by people over 60 now than ever before, the potential for abuse only continues to grow.

So, how can you prevent elder abuse happening to you? And if you are already experiencing it, what can you do to regain control over your finances, independence and wellbeing?

Prevention better than cure

The best way to avoid the impacts of elder abuse is to protect yourself against it beginning in the first place.

Awareness is the first step, so having read this article and knowing the warning signs, you’re already ahead of the game!

Other preventative actions include:

Maintaining contact: social interactions are important not just for warding off loneliness but providing access to other points of view and avenues for support.

External advisers: engage your own advisers – don’t simply employ who someone tells you to. They should be an impartial, qualified set of eyes to monitor things for you and point out anything that doesn’t seem right. This includes a financial advisor, lawyer, accountant, doctor and so on. A support person attending appointments with you may give you extra assurance.

Power of attorney/guardianship: nominate multiple people, so that no one individual has all the say. It can be useful to include someone who is not a relative for impartiality, such as a trusted friend or your lawyer.

Superannuation beneficiaries: super is separate from your will, but beneficiary nominations can only be spouse, child, dependent or interdependent otherwise it will go to you Will. In your Will you can direct to other people or charities. Some beneficiaries lapse, so will need to be renewed.

Wills: review your will to ensure it reflects YOUR wishes, not someone else’s. People can jostle over not only their own inheritance but may try to influence you to leave others out.

Documenting everything: keep a written record, especially where money is concerned – such as acting as Bank of Mum and Dad for adult kids to purchase property. Outline how much is given, what if any interest/repayments are expected and when, and what happens if their relationship subsequently breaks down.

Encouraging independence: people who have come to expect handouts can become abusive if those handouts stop or requests for more are denied. Support and encourage others, especially your kids, to be financially independent and self-sufficient.

Taking back control

Sadly, prevention is no longer an option for an estimated 598,000 Australians already experiencing elder abuse. However, it is still possible to break the cycle.

Don’t be embarrassed or stick your head in the sand hoping things will improve. You have done nothing wrong. You are entitled to enjoy your retirement years.

To take back control over your affairs, your wellbeing and your independence:

Ensure your physical safety first and foremost.

Seek medical attention for your physical and mental health (the latter is crucial for making good decisions around the other points on this list).

Get support from another relative, close friend, neighbour, or other trusted person. Don’t be alone.

Secure a roof over your head. Having a stable place to live gives you the security and focus to tackle other concerns.

Freeze access to your money – bank accounts, credit cards etc. This will stop (further) unauthorised withdrawals or purchases being charged to you.

Seek professional advice. Your financial adviser, tax accountant and lawyer will be able to guide you through protecting your home, money, guardianship and estate planning matters.

Make informed changes. Don’t do anything rashly – make necessary changes once you have sought independent advice and considered your options. This may involve making changes to your power of attorney, will, superannuation, bank accounts, even your phone number in extreme cases.

Consider counselling. Your abuser may not realise the severity of their actions. An independent counsellor may be able to help them see this and change their ways, and ultimately salvage your relationship.

If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, seek help straight away. Speak to a trusted relative or friend. Seek independent legal and financial advice about your affairs. Or call the government’s free elder abuse line on 1800 353 374. And if your life is in danger, call triple zero (000) immediately.

Helen Baker is a licensed Australian financial adviser and author of On Your Own Two Feet: The Essential Guide to Financial Independence for all Women. Helen is among the 1% of financial planners who hold a master’s degree in the field. Princess Diana's brother reveals tragic secret

Charles Spencer has bravely detailed the alleged sexual abuse he experienced as a child.

The younger brother of Princess Diana, now 59, initially made the revelation that he was abused as a child while in boarding school when he was 42.

Now, the 9th Earl Spencer is recalling the alleged trauma in his new memoir A Very Private School, and the first moment he told anyone about the abuse he experienced.

“I was doing a 10-day course of very deep introspection and therapy,” he told Fox News Digital.

“My therapist said to each of us, ‘Whisper to me one secret you’d never told anyone.’ I whispered to him that I was sexually abused as a child by an adult.

"And I remember him looking so shocked, and he had heard it all. Afterwards, he took me aside and said, ‘This is very serious stuff.’”

He added that at that stage, he already had children, and having kids of his own made him realise how devastating his experience was.

“I suddenly put it into context. What if one of my children of either gender had been subjected to this as an 11-year-old? It made my blood boil," he said.

"I then started to allow myself to feel the full devastation of what had happened to me.”

Spencer was eight when he was enrolled at Maidwell Hall, an elite English boarding school, and he claimed that it didn't take long for him to witness and experience incidents of alleged abuse.

He claimed that he was groomed and sexually abused at age 11 by an assistant matron at the school, who was 19 or 20 years old.

“It was a brutal experience,” he claimed in his memoir.

“The headmaster was a sadistic pedophile. He staffed a very small number of teachers in this place who were either … perverted or would never tell tales against him. There wasn’t really anyone to go to.“

He added that the beatings had become "a ritual part of every day," and his parents had no idea the extent of what was going on behind closed doors.

The royal also alleged that one student was whipped so badly he struggled to take off his pants at night because the dried blood and clothing stuck to his skin, and that it took two weeks for him to recover.

Spencer claimed he was allowed to write a letter to his parents once a week, with the messages being supervised so he was unable to tell his parents what was going on.

“We were just left there at the mercy of some really dangerous people,” Spencer alleged.

He said that meeting with other former pupils was what motivated him to write the new memoir, and revisit the painful memories of his past.

The historian recalled the moment he met another former student, who kept quiet about the abuse he experience because it was so traumatising.

"He told me how he was made to feel worthless every day, how he’d been seriously sexually assaulted as a nine-year-old three times by somebody who was meant to protect him," he recalled.

“I took 10 pages of notes, stopped and said, ‘This is too terrible — I can’t tell this story.’ He reached across, grabbed my arm and said, ‘Somebody has to do it – it’s got to be you.’ That convinced me, the truth needed to be shared with the world.”

The 9th Earl also said that he is undergoing “a very effective” post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, as well as Tai Chi and breathing exercises.

“I’ve got a whole armoury of support techniques to try and get to a better place,” he shared.

Image: Getty

“My sister-in-law announced she was pregnant at my child’s funeral”

A woman has asked for advice on how to navigate her relationship with her sister-in-law, after the woman overheard an inappropriate conversation at her child’s funeral.

The grieving mother, a 28-year-old named Melissa, took to Reddit to share the heartbreaking story of how her toddler passed away after a battle with cancer.

Melissa described the time as the “hardest in my life”, explaining how she felt she lost “a part of herself” after the funeral.

While Melissa expected her toddlers’ memorial service to be difficult, she never predicted a family member would make it even harder.

The mother said that when she heard her sister-in-law telling people about her pregnancy, she thought the move was just cruel.

“She didn't make a big announcement but more than ten people at the service 'heard' and it's what everyone was talking about. To understate it, I was livid,” Melissa wrote on Reddit.

Melissa’s post then asked social media users for advice, as she was unsure how much of a relationship she wanted to have with her sister-in-law after the stunt.

The 28-year-old shared that she had fallen pregnant herself, and was facing pressure to have a party in celebration, but she didn’t want her whole family in attendance.

“I've been working on who I want to invite, and I really don't want my SIL there,” she said.

“Besides what she did, she's a vindictive and mean person and I cannot stand her.”

“I mentioned it to my husband and he says he couldn't care less whether she's there or not. But for the sake of saving face, I want opinions before I do this.”

She asked the online forum if she would be “an a**hole” for not inviting her, addin that she would still be inviting her husband's other sister and husband's brother's wife.

“The original SIL will be the only one not invited,” she clarified.

The post was flooded with comments as many backed up Melissa, slamming the sister-in-law for her selfish behaviour.

“I wouldn't want someone like that around me. Announcing a pregnancy at a child's funeral is insane,” one said.

“Cut her off and ignore everyone close to her. You are right to have nothing to do with her. She's totally classless.”

However, others encouraged her to have an adult conversation with her sister-in-law in an attempt to mend their relationship.

“Please let it go,” one person began. “This happened on a terrible day during a bad time for you. It's possible that could be clouding how you're looking at this, she may not have been malicious at all.”

Parents busted for making their healthy child use a wheelchair to claim benefits

A cruel mother and father have been jailed for over six years for forcing their healthy child to use a wheelchair in order to claim benefit payments.

In 2012, Louise Law and her ex-husband Martin forced their then seven-year-old daughter into the wheelchair, as a ploy to gain a mobility car and disability allowance payments despite their being nothing wrong with her.

The parents carried on with the scam for four years while they "fabricated illnesses and exaggerated symptoms" to teachers and NHS workers, all while raking in the extensive payments.

The crown court in East Yorkshire, England, heard that the child suffered "gratuitous degradation" at being forced to use the wheelchair, as they were bullied at school and deprived of an ordinary childhood.

In court, Louise Law admitted an offence of child cruelty, however she changed her plea on the day of a scheduled trial and was jailed for six years and nine months.

Martin Law, now split from his wife, is now a long-term resident of a care home and was ruled unfit to enter a plea - although a jury convicted him of child cruelty, and was made subject of a guardianship order.

Passing sentence, Judge Kate Rayfield told Mrs Law, "She missed out on so much of her childhood because of what you put her through."

"Despite all of her tests revealing nothing wrong, you continued to subject her to appointments and investigations. You did the talking yourselves, telling the doctors lies."

"This was a scam... You were telling her to report symptoms that she never said that she had."

When the child reached the age of 18 in 2022, she was interviewed by police as she said the faux medical treatment from her parents began when she was six years old.

A few initial medical appointments progressed to around 30 hospital appointments, including overnight stays.

Prosecutor Louise Reevell told the court, "Her parents made her think that she could not walk properly. She would go to school in a wheelchair but she didn't really need it."

Despite medical professionals proving that the child did not need the extensive medical treatment, her parents still claimed that the illnesses and symptoms of their daughter were genuine.

Flight cancelled after parents demand free upgrade for their child

A flight was delayed for hours before being ultimately cancelled after two parents demanded that their child was upgraded to first class for free.

A plane in China was grounded for three hours after the parents caused a ruckus with the cabin crew, and were eventually kicked off the aircraft.

According to a fellow passenger, the argument kicked off when an unsupervised child began to sob uncontrollably after boarding a flight from Chengdu to Beijing.

As it turned out, the inconsolable toddler’s parents were seated in first class but had only bought their child an economy ticket.

It was then that the angry dad confronted the staff, demanding that his son be moved to first class at no extra cost.

According to the South China Morning Post, the irate dad explained that because he had already paid for two first class tickets, his child’s upgrade should be free.

In the clip shot by a fellow passenger, the outraged dad began berating a group of passengers, crew members, and security guards as they repeatedly explained why his child isn’t entitled to an upgrade.

“Stop swearing at me,” fumed the father. “You have no right to do that.”

When a security guard attempts to de-escalate the situation, the parent lays into him, shouting: “What gives you the right to order me about?”

This prompts a woman to retort: “You’ve wasted too much of our time and we won’t tolerate it any longer.”

After three hours of back and forth, the couple were eventually kicked off the plane, while the flight was cancelled.

The entitled passenger has since been rinsed on social media with one commenter fuming, “This man is so selfish.”

Others suggested solutions for the father that didn’t involve the airline giving the man an extra first-class seat.

“He can switch seats,” advised one person. “Let him sit in economy class, and have the mum take care of the child in the first-class cabin.”

Some on social media were quick to chastise the airline for their handling of the situation, with one person writing, “Keeping the quarrel going for hours? The problem-solving skills of the crew are poor.”

Britney Spears’ memoir is a reminder of the stigma and potential damage of child stardom

Jane O’Connor, Birmingham City University

Britney Spears’ new memoir, The Woman in Me, illustrates once again the potential lifelong damage that can be caused by being a child star. Like many before her, including Judy Garland and Michael Jackson, Spears was ushered into the dangerous terrain of childhood fame by the adults who were supposed to be protecting her, and was utterly unprepared to deal with the fallout.

Spears’ father’s conservatorship, controlling every aspect of her personal and professional life, was finally rescinded in 2021. She is now able to share the details of her extraordinary years in the limelight and beyond.

From a sociological perspective, childhood is considered socially constructed. This means that there are specific ways of raising children which are socially and culturally defined. We discard these conventions surrounding the early years of life at our peril.

The boundaries and rules around what is and is not acceptable during childhood, and the normal activities and institutions that shape the experience of being a child have developed over the centuries for a reason – to try and keep children safe from the harsh realities of the adult world.

Being sexualised and valued for your appearance, being paid to work, having to deal with criticism and unwanted attention from strangers – these are all difficult aspects of growing up. Children and teens need careful support and guidance if they are to navigate safely into their adult lives and identities.

The experience of childhood fame throws aside this social safety net for children in every possible way, and the consequences can be disastrous.

The price of child fame

From the earliest child stars of Hollywood’s golden age, through the television sitcoms and shows of the mid-20th century, the rise of the pop and film industries in the following decades and the burst in popularity of reality TV and talent shows of the early 21st century, children have always featured. Many have paid a heavy price for their often short period of fame.

Sad stories of drug and alcohol addiction, family disputes, criminal activity and toxic relationships are frequently reported by the media. These reinforce the stereotypical “child star gone bad” and “too much too young” narratives that the wider public has come to expect.

For example, stories abound of Macaulay Culkin “divorcing” his controlling parents and his difficulties transitioning into adult life, feeling trapped in the image of boyhood innocence of his most famous character, Kevin in the Home Alone movies.

In her autobiography actor Drew Barrymore has written about her casual acceptance at Hollywood parties and consumption of alcohol at a very young age, following her role in E.T. (1982) aged five.

There is also the tragic life and death of Gary Coleman, cute kid star of the American sitcom Diff'rent Strokes (1978-1986).

Coleman, who died at 42 following a history of substance abuse and depression, reported being deeply humiliated by people asking: “Didn’t you used to be …?” when he was working as a security guard at a supermarket as an adult.

Other possibilities

It’s important to note, however, that a difficult trajectory is not the experience of all child stars and former child stars. The actors from the Harry Potter films, for example, seem largely to have transitioned well into adult lives and careers – some in the spotlight, others not.

And the new generation of famous children and teens such as Millie Bobby Brown, star of the Netflix show Stranger Things (2016-present), seem more prepared for fame than their predecessors, in control of their images and identities via their own social media platforms and potentially protected to some extent from extreme sexualisation by the MeToo movement.

Even so, Brown commented on her 16th birthday that: “There are moments I get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization, and unnecessary insults.”

For Spears though, these were more than moments. She details in her memoir how the constant public scrutiny of her body and physical appearance, being valued for her sexuality and treated as a commodity have characterised her entire life.

It is no wonder she shaved her head in 2007, a move interpreted by the media as her having “gone mad”, but in fact a powerful indication of her anger at being perceived as nothing more than a dancing sex-doll. As she writes in her memoir: "I knew a lot of guys thought long hair was hot. Shaving my head was a way of saying to the world: fuck you. You want me to be pretty for you? Fuck you. You want me to be good for you? Fuck you. You want me to be your dream girl? Fuck you."

The sociologist Erving Goffman wrote about the stigma of having a “spoiled identity” whereby people carry with them the public shame of transgression or physical difference.

Being a former child star can be stigmatising for many reasons, including being constantly compared to an ideal younger version of yourself and not having had a “normal” childhood or conventional family relationships.

In this memoir, Britney attempts to face down that stigma and reclaim her identity and person-hood as an adult. In doing so, she demonstrates that it can be possible to leave the dangerous terrain of early fame behind – but the journey is a tough one.

Jane O’Connor, Reader in Childhood Studies, Birmingham City University

Image credits: Getty Images / Instagram,

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. "From child to adult": Unseen pics of Prince Christian mark his 18th birthday

Prince Christian of Denmark, the eldest son of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, marked his 18th birthday with a grand gala dinner that befits his future role as a potential monarch. Royals from various corners of the world gathered at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen for a magnificent celebration of this milestone event.

At present, Prince Christian holds the position of second in line to the Danish throne. His grandmother, Queen Margrethe, currently reigns, and his father, Crown Prince Frederik, is the heir apparent. With this auspicious celebration, the Danish royal family and their esteemed guests paid tribute to the young prince who may someday ascend to the throne. (Plus, he now has his own stamp!)

The guest list for this momentous occasion included a stellar array of fellow future monarchs from across Europe. Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, aged 21, graced the gala with her presence. Alongside her were 19-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, who attended with her parents, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Princess Estelle of Sweden, aged 11, was also among the esteemed guests, accompanied by her parents, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel. Furthermore, Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, the 19-year-old heir to the Dutch throne, added her royal grace to the event.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS 🇩🇰 (@detdanskekongehus)

As Prince Christian stepped into adulthood, his proud parents, Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, took a nostalgic look back at their son's journey through life.

In a touching post shared on the official Danish royal family Instagram account, an album was published with the caption, "From child to adult. Seen from the parents' camera roll." This digital scrapbook offered a glimpse into the life of the Danish prince, capturing poignant moments that tell the story of his growth and development.

The first image in the album featured a precious baby picture, showcasing three generations of the Danish Crown. It served as a testament to the continuity of a rich royal heritage. The subsequent photos depicted the family exploring their native Denmark, emphasising the connection between the Danish royals and their beloved country. The final image showed a mature and poised Prince Christian, symbolising his transition into adulthood and a potential future as a Danish monarch.

As Prince Christian's 18th birthday celebration came to a close, it was evident that the royal family and their guests were not only celebrating a birthday but also the promising future of a young prince destined to play a significant role in Denmark's rich history. The gala dinner was not only a magnificent event but a symbol of unity among European royal families, demonstrating the strength of their bonds, both personal and regal.

Images: Instagram

Ted Lasso star ordered to pay massive child support sum

Jason Sudeikis has been ordered to pay ex Olivia Wilde an enormous sum of child support, as a bitter two-year custody battle draws to a close.

According to new court filings obtained by Page Six, the Ted Lasso star has allegedly agreed to pay his ex $27,500 ($A42,800) per month in child support for their two kids, Otis, 9, and Daisy, 6.

The hefty settlement has been based on Sudeikis' reported 2023 income of $10.5 million ($A16.3 million) and Wilde’s estimated income of $500,000 ($A778,000).

“The parties agree that child support for the minor children in the amount of $27,500 per month is sufficient to maintain the needs of the minor children considering Jason’s station in life … is consistent with each child’s best interest, and application of the guideline would be unjust or inappropriate in this case,” the court papers reportedly state.

The legal proceedings began two years ago, and took a dramatic turn in 2022 when Wilde, who was promoting her new movie Don't Worry Darling at the time, was served legal papers while on stage delivering a speech at CinemaCon.

At the time, a source told Page Six that Wilde was mortified over the brazen act.

“It seemed unthinkable to her, and it took a moment to set in, but as mortifying as it was, she did not want to give a reaction,” the insider explained.

Since then, things have improved for the couple, as they were both seen putting on a united front at Otis' soccer game in LA.

Wilde and Sudeikis started dating in November 2011 and got engaged in January 2013. They welcomed their two kids before separating in November 2020.

"Divorce immediately": Dad sparks outrage over "selfish" flight

A father has been slammed online for his "selfish" behaviour to enjoy a child-free flight.

The interaction was captured by a fellow traveller, a mother named Kristine, who observed a mum boarding the plane who was struggling to coordinate her luggage, a restless toddler and a newborn baby.

"I helped her get the luggage above and we sat down (in the same row)," the mum said.

After Kristine realised the father was seated in another row ahead with another small child, she offered to switch seats so the family could sit together.

"He says 'Great, thanks' and sends over another small kid to sit with the mum. He enjoyed a kid-free flight," she wrote in now-viral TikTok video.

The footage was taken from the aisle seat prior to take off, as she wrote in the caption, "A little Sunday rage for ya."

Kristine said she was astonished by the man's response and initially did not know how to respond.

"I was like, 'No, I need the aisle [seat] because my kids are in the row behind and I need to be able to help them out'," she recalled telling the father.

The video, which had racked up over 4 million views, had many people up in arms over the man's selfish behaviour towards his wife.

"I'd be so mad," one person commented, while another said, "I would have said no that's not what I meant give me my seat back."

"The absolute rage I am feeling right now," a third person wrote, while another simply said, "Divorce immediately."

However, some men were quick to jump to the dad's defence.

"If they switched wouldn't the kid be alone?" one asked.

Another said, "What if he were the stay at home dad and mom was finally looking after the kids so he could have a break?"

In a second video, Kristine addressed a commenter who deemed the story to be fake and wondered how so many people could side with the man's selfish actions.

"This post went pretty bonkers, but what strikes me most of all is how differently it's received by men and women in the comments," Kristine said.

"The mental gymnastics that men will do to try defend this guy is unreal."

Image credits: Getty Images / TikTok

Heavily pregnant mum and disabled child kicked off plane

Siobhan Foster, her husband, and their disabled child were kicked off their flight after she was accused of being "aggressive" by a flight attendant.

Foster, who is seven months pregnant, was onboard an easyJet flight to Ibiza to celebrate her brother's wedding.

She struggled to find room for her carry-on in the overhead baggage compartment, so she asked a flight attendant to help her find space, but the response was reportedly "a sharp ‘Clearly Not’", which eventually led to a dispute.

When things escalated, all 180 passengers were eventually told to disembark.

One of Foster's outraged friends posted the video on social media, and the Newtonabbey mum was seen collecting hand luggage while struggling to carry her toddler.

“We’re being thrown off the plane today because of somebody thinking they’re better than everyone else,” the friend said.

The easyJet stewardess responded: “Bye, bye bye," as the upset family walked down the stairs.

Foster took to Facebook to complain about her experience with "sleezy jet".

“So, I asked could you help me find somewhere, her reply was ‘You’ll need to find somewhere yourself’ even though there literally was nowhere," she wrote.

She then claimed that she asked for help again, because she was heavily pregnant, to which the flight attendant allegedly said: "You’re being abusive and it’s not my job to help you.”

Another flight attendant reportedly backed up her co-worker, but Foster argued that other airlines have been more helpful as she is pregnant.

“Writing this, I understand it would make you think was I being abusive, but I honestly wasn’t and the whole plane can vouch for me,” Foster wrote. “People were actually putting this on [Facebook] about how bad I was treated.”

After eventually finding a place for her bag, the pregnant mum was allegedly confronted by two other crew members who also accused her of being “aggressive.”

Foster decided to ignore them because she was "crying" and "so upset," but the flight attendant reportedly started raising her voice.

They were then kicked off, and were told it was because of Foster's aggression, but when Foster’s mum and brother asked for an exact reason, the crew members allegedly couldn't give them a direct response.

After an hour, everyone had to disembark and the family were met by eight police officers and two Swissport employees and were told they would not be allowed back on the flight, despite other passengers being allowed back in.

“So, that whole day we were in Belfast airport from one lunchtime to nine that night with our child, my legs were so swollen and sore with being on them all this time I was crying uncontrollably that this was happening to us for no reason whatsoever.

“I’m so traumatized to the point I don’t know how I’ll ever fly again,” she wrote on Facebook.

EasyJet has denied any wrongdoing and a spokesperson told the Daily Mail that "a group of passengers were "behaving disruptively."

“EasyJet’s cabin crew and ground agents are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time.

“The Captain took the decision to ask all passengers on the flight to return to the terminal so the situation could be resolved and as soon as it was they re-boarded and the aircraft continued to Ibiza.”

Despite the incident, the Foster family eventually made it to Ibiza the next day, just in time for the wedding, after catching a RyanAir flight out of Dublin.

“Thankfully we got to Ibiza and made my brother’s wedding to say how stressed, upset, and overwhelmed I’ve been I honestly think I’ve no words,” she wrote.

“EasyJet should be ashamed of themselves and I most definitely am taking this further, I’m still in shock of how we were treated especially being seven months pregnant and having a disabled child with us.”

Images: Facebook

What does financial abuse really look like?

Sally is in her 20s, lives in a dilapidated rental home and works three jobs. Fifty-something Sarah owns a large home, drives a Mercedes and is a corporate executive. Pensioner Scott, in his mid-70s, still lives in the home in which he and his late wife raised their children. Who would you say is more vulnerable to financial abuse?

The answer, you may be surprised to learn, is all three. Financial abuse, according to the government’s MoneySmart, is a type of family and domestic violence:

“It often happens alongside other types of violence, such as physical or emotional abuse. It can leave you feeling vulnerable, isolated, depressed and anxious. It can also take away your independence.”

Commonly a spouse or partner is the perpetrator, but it can come from any relative or friend. A 2022 Commonwealth Bank report suggests over 623,000 Australians experienced financial abuse in 2020 alone – roughly one in 30 women and one in 50 men. Anyone – regardless of age, wealth etc. – can be a victim.

Financial abuse has many faces

Just as finances are complex, so too is financial abuse, which can be viewed from many angles:

Couples: One partner controls everything money related. I know of one instance where a woman’s partner went so far as counting coffee pods; another checked car mileage to stop his partner driving further than school drop-offs.

Exes: Not working specifically to avoid paying child support; withholding information to delay settlement; bullying into a menial settlement.

Multi-generations: Children or grandchildren milking elderly relatives; seizing control over their finances and living arrangements.

Non-relatives: Such as friends buying property together without properly documenting everything, then fighting come sale time.

Business relationships: Duped signatures on trust and business documents; hiding debts; impeding or undervaluing someone’s exit.

Warning signs

There are common warning signs that you, or someone you know, is suffering financial abuse:

Pressure to make decisions: to invest your money or superannuation in crazy things that go bust, or to do nothing and not keep up with inflation (let alone grow your wealth), go guarantor on a loan, or sign power of attorney.

Draining money: using your money to fund their business or investment on the promise a return is coming that never does (which could be poor management or deliberate deceit). This could continue for years until you’re left homeless and bankrupt.

Unfair claims: your partner came into the relationship with nothing and stays just long enough to make a claim on your home.

Controlled spending: this may start small (‘Don’t spend so much on clothes!’) but can become extreme.

Blackmail: I’ve heard of people denied access to their grandkids unless they gave their son/daughter money or amended their will.

Restricted access: you’re denied access to your own or joint finances, from having your own accounts, or are banned from working to earn your own income and superannuation.

Tracking: sharing your location by smartphone may sound practical or safe but is open to abuse.

Social isolation: cutting you off from friends and family; pressing for an interstate move.

Reckless spending: your money is spent haphazardly – you may be kept in the dark or pressured not to ask questions.

Tying down: trapping you into a big mortgage to crimp your freedom.

Guilting: I have seen wealthy adults guilt their less fortunate parents into paying their bills, and gambling addicts guilt partners into paying their debts (with no intention to address their addiction or plan to pay it back).

Protecting yourself

The best prevention of all is to avoid thinking ‘it won’t happen to me’. So many victims of financial abuse once thought exactly the same.

Other tips include:

Speak up: Sometimes, starting a conversation can be enough to deliver positive change and even save a relationship (avoiding divorce is cheaper for everyone!)

Have an emergency fund – cash only you can access, easily, in a crisis.

Keep separate bank accounts – deposit your income here, then transfer money for joint bills into a joint account.

Make decisions together – don’t leave money matters to your partner/children. It’s your money too.

Get outside perspective: financial advisers are accountable to you as their client and help provide visibility over your assets, liabilities and risks. Ensure they are qualified and currently practicing.

If you think you may be a victim of financial abuse, I beg you – seek help immediately. Suffering in silence and letting the situation snowball is the costliest thing you can do. Both financially and emotionally!

Lifeline - 13 11 14

1800RESPECT - 1800 737 732

Family Relationship Advice Line - 1800 050 32

Good Shepherd Australia Financial Independence Hub - 1300 050 150

National Debt Helpline - 1800 007 007

Helen Baker is a licensed Australian financial adviser and author of the new book, On Your Own Two Feet: The Essential Guide to Financial Independence for all Women (Ventura Press, $32.99). Helen is among the 1% of financial planners who hold a master’s degree in the field. Child star and her brother die at just 14

The family of both rapper Lil Tay, 14, and her brother, Jason Tian, 21, have announced on social media that they have both passed away.

Lil Tay, originally known as Claire Hope, was a musical artist and influencer with an enormous, three-million strong following on Instagram, the same account through which the family shared the statement that she passed away suddenly. Their deaths are currently being investigated, as after the controversial social media star's former manager Harry Tsang called into question the legitimacy of the post - which did not mention a cause of death - as police in both Vancouver and LA report that they have no current record of their passing.

The statement expressed the profound grief and pain the family is experiencing due to this apparent unexpected loss.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lil Tay (@liltay)

Lil Tay gained prominence on social media in 2018 at the tender age of just nine. "Miracles do exist": Astonishing return of missing teen after four years

An American teenager has been found after she went missing four years ago, when she walked into a police station and asked to be taken off the missing children list.

Alicia Navarro, who is now 18, walked into a police station in a small town in Montana, close to the Canadian border, and identified herself as the teenager who was reported missing in September 2019.

“Alicia Navarro has been located,” Glendale public safety communications manager Jose Santiago said during a press conference.

“She is by all accounts, safe, she is by all accounts healthy and she is by all accounts happy.”

The teenager reportedly left her home willingly four years ago when she was 14-years-old, leaving her parents a note when she disappeared from her house overnight on September 15th 2019.

Alicia, who has been described as a high-functioning autistic person, left a handwritten note for her parents that read, “I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry,” before she slipped out of the house while they slept.

Her parents then didn't hear from her for four years, until they were contacted by the Glendale Police Department to let them know their child had been found.

Alicia had an emotional reunion with her mum, who never stopped looking for her, as she was very apologetic over the pain her mother went through not knowing where she was for the past four years or even if she was still alive.

Her mom, Jessica Nuñez, called the discovery of her daughter four years after her disappearance a miracle in a video she posted to Facebook.

“For everyone who has missing loved ones, I want you to use this case as an example,” she said. “Miracles do exist. Never lose hope and always fight.”

Nuñez said she doesn’t have details on her daughter’s disappearance but said “the important thing is that she is alive.”

Glendale police are now investigating how the teenager got to Montana, and how she has survived over the last four years by herself.

Alicia told police that no one has harmed her and appeared to be healthy, while the girl currently remains in Montana and is able to come and go as she pleases and has asked for privacy so she can move on with her life.

“We can only imagine what she’s going through, mentally, emotionally, as well as her family, and as much as we’d like to say this is the end, this is probably only the beginning of where this investigation will go,” Glendale PD Lt. Scott Waite said.

Princess Eugenie welcomes her second child

Princess Eugenie has expanded the ranks of the royals with the arrival of her second child - another son with husband Jack Brooksbank.

To celebrate, the princess took to her official Instagram account, sharing two pictures of their new bundle of joy - one of the baby by himself, and another with his proud big brother, August.

“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy,” she captioned the pics, “Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1lbs.”

Eugenie then made the touching explanation that little Ernest’s name was more than regal, but also meant a lot to the history of their family, too.

“He is named after his great great great Grandfather George,” she said, “his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald.”

And last but certainly not least, she shared that “Augie is loving being a big brother already.”

Some have speculated that Eugenie could be referring to either King George V - who would actually be Ernest’s great-great-great grandfather - or King George VI, while others have noted that the name also honours Jack’s father George, and Sarah Ferguson’s father Ronald.

Either way, fans were delighted to hear the happy news, whether from Eugenie or from Buckingham Palace.

“Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank," a palace statement read. "Ernest was born on Tuesday, 30th May, and weighed 7lbs 1oz."

And it was in response to Eugenie’s photos that they came out in droves to celebrate, showering the family in their love and congratulations for the first royal baby since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and coronation of King Charles III.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Princess Eugenie (@princesseugenie)

“Congratulations Eugenie,” one wrote. “Your heavenly grandma Lilibet and grandpa Philip would have been so proud and thrilled after hearing the news of the arrival of another great-grandchild”.

“Huge congratulations to you both!!!” another gushed. “To a lot of great memories as a family of four now. Your grandma as well as your grandpa are looking down on you with a lot of love!!”

“Congratulations with the birth of your son Ernest … August is a big brother now and have someone to play with for later,” one declared.

Meanwhile, a few took the opportunity to note that young August bore a striking resemblance to his cousin, Archie.

“Congratulations!” someone shared. “August looks so much his CA cousin in that second photo.”

“Is it just me or does Augie look just like Archie?” another asked.

“Auggie looks like Archie! Congratulations on your new baby boy!” one more shared.

And if there was one thing they could all agree on, it was that the new royal - 13th in line to the throne - was a “beautiful” addition to the family.

Images: Instagram
